VLIZ assists in formally publishing marine data with a DOI

Upon request of marine scientists in Flanders, VLIZ developed an application for the publication of data sets. This in order to make the data sets easy to cite and easy to trace. This procedure implies that:

• an extensive description is given,
• a citation with a DOI (a unique identifier of the data set) is created, and
• the data set is made publicly available by the repository.

When a manuscript is submitted for publication it is nowadays often demanded to make the supporting data set publicly available through an acknowledged repository. As VLIZ is officially recognized to be part of the ICSU World Data System, it can provide this service for all marine scientists in Flanders.
 
By now approximately five datasets have been provided with a data citation, prior to the publishing of an article.
