Abstract
he heterotrophic bacterial strain HIS 53 was grown in a chemostat with aspartate as the growth limiting substrate at specific growth rates of 0.001, 0.003 and 0.01 h-1 and in a batch culture on aspartate (specific growth rate 0.33 h-1). The respiratory capacity for a number of substrates increased with increasing growth rate (e.g. aspartate, alanine, asparagine, glutamate and glutamine), whereas for other substrates the reverse was found, that is a decrease of the respiratory capacity with an increase of the growth rate (e.g. glucose and pyruvate). For some other substrates the respiratory capacity varied at a lower level (e.g. valine and leucine). Thus for at least a number of substrates the respiratory capacity was related to the growth rate. Some preliminary experiments were done on HIS 53 grown in a continuous culture system with a programmed variation of the dilution rate. In a chemostat culture with a constant dilution rate of 0.12 h-1, the respiratory capacity for aspartate was constant at 3.5 µmol aspartate mg protein-1 h-1.
