Abstract
This paper deals with the squid family Ommastrephidae of which some species are presently being exploited for food in some areas of the world. While the taxonomy is stable enough that species distinctions are fairly clear, interspecific relationships are weakly characterized in the literature with some genera formed on the basis of only a few characters. The taxonomic relationships of many species of the family distributional information from the literature and mainly from the holdings of the Invertebrate Collection at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography are summarized.
