Starting from a simple model and a few limiting constraints (minimal stresses, maximal simplicity and operational stability) the major features of a theoretical pharynx are derived, assuming its lumen is opened by muscles and closed by hydrostatic pressure. The theory leads to a pharynx with a triradiate lumen, approximately radially oriented muscles and gives quantitative estimations of the suctions and pressures which can be produced, of the mean distance between the myofilaments and of the interdefecation interval in function of body pressure and rate of food uptake. When applied to Ascaris the predictions are found to be in reasonable agreement with the observations. |
