Abstract
A new, deep-water species is assigned to the hermit crab genus Goreopagurus McLaughlin, 1988, previously knownonly from western Atlantic and eastern Pacific waters. The assignment is made because of the unusual and sexuallydimorphic expansion of the right cheliped characteristic of species of this genus. However, in contrast to its congeners,Goreopagurus poorei sp. nov. has distally quadriserial gills and exhibits no male sexual tube development. The lattercondition has made it necessary to reevaluate the emphasis placed on sexual tubes in paguroid systematics.Goreopagurus has been emended to accommodate this species.
