Abstract
This study is a contribution to the ichthyology and in particular to the study of predator / prey interrelationships in the Southern Ocean. The otoliths of 120 species, known to occur in the region, are described and illustrated. Synoptic notes on the diagnostic features, intraspecific morphological variation and ontogenetic development are provided. Wherever possible, the relationships between otolith length and fish length as well as between fish length and mass are also presented. A key to the otoliths, based primarily on geometric shape, has been developed to fascilitate the identification of otoliths found in predator stomachs.
