Abstract
The first naturalised British population of the alien Manila clam becameestablished in Poole Harbour, Dorset, after its introduction for aquaculturein the 1980s. Asserting that the clam could not naturalise, the BritishGovernment supported the introduction. The statutory conservation agencywas against it. What happened next was not anticipated by either of them.
