Abstract
In this paper, we report the palicid crab, Palicus gracilis (Smith 1883), from the southwestern Atlantic (in Brazilian waters) for the first time. The ovigerous female specimen was collected on May 8, 2011, by a bottom trawl along the continental slope in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, on board of the R/V Seward Johnson, using a semi-balloon otter trawl net with 50 mm mesh size and 18 m of mouth opening. This report extends the known geographic distribution of the species about 4.000 km southwards (previous southernmost record: Curaçao) and increases the number of species of Palicidae in Brazil to eight.
