Abstract
The tendency to blistering of coil coated steel sheets after deformation was investigated in both accelerated tests and marine climate. Corrosion processes played a crucial role in the blistering mechanism in deformed areas and blistering increased with induced strain. The inferior performance in deformed areas was associated mainly with higher permeability of organic coatings due to formation of additional defects. Localized water uptake measurements by the parallel plate capacitor technique were successfully applied to quantify the total damage to protective coatings induced by deformation. A link was found between blistering behaviour and the relative increase in water uptake.
