Abstract
    (1) Tidal coverage produces diverse soil conditions on a saltmarsh, a rapid drainage at creek edges contrasting with the waterlogging occurring elsewhere on the marsh surface following retreat of the tide. (2) The similarity of the time courses of aphid mortality and recovery from anoxia observed during experimental submergence in the field and in oxygen-deficient sea water in the laboratory, indicate that oxygen deficiency is a primary cause of mortality during prolonged submergence in the field. (3) It is suggested that this factor prevents the colonization of aster plants growing in those parts of the marshes which become waterlogged during periods of tidal flooding. (4) A tendency for the exclusion of aphids from non-edge regions of the marsh is also postulated to result from the demonstrated reduction in reproductive capacity and the susceptibility of newly born first instars to submergence.
