| Abstract |
Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over recent decades, mainly due to the particularly strong warming in northern high latitudes. Satellite images provide a detailed account of these changes, but they are only available as far back as the 1970s. For periods before the twentieth century, paleoclimate proxies are the main source of information, but their location dependence makes it challenging to understand the long-term context of recent changes over large scales. |
