Abstract
    1.

An experimental permanent quadrat study was carried out in a mosaic vegetation of algae in the undergrowth of theSalicornietum strictae in the saltmarsh of Holwerd (The Netherlands, prov. Friesland).

    2.

The developments in the algal vegetation units were described by means of mapping.

    3.

In several aspects, this mapping method provided more detailed information on the dynamics of the units than the more commonly used estimation method.
