Abstract
The chemical industry in Flanders released a considerable investment programm on waste water treatment since the early seventies. As a result, an environmental survey could be set up in 1997 proving that in terms of COD, a 54 % improvement could be reached. Also biodiversity and quality of fish have improved. A number of issues regarding ecotoxicity, taxes, permits are developed in view of current and future government policies.
