Abstract
The sedimentary sequences of the San Julián Formation are described and a subdivision into the Gran Bajo and Meseta Chica members is proposed. The benthonic foraminifera found in the type section of the San Julián Formation are studied, being recognized four assemblages which characterize several levels of the Julián Stage (Upper Eocene-Lower Oligocene). Shallow waters and warm temperate temperature at the time of the deposition of the Julián Stage are inferred. The microfaunal assemblages are analyzed and it is concluded that the Julián Stage contains common elements to those of cosmopolitan distribution and to those restricted to the North American Gulf and Atlantic Coasts, North Europe and Australasian regions.
