| Abstract |
That the old Chondrostei-Holostei-Teleostei categories merely divide the actinopterygian fishes into 3 levels of structural organization is gener- ally held. Also, it is widely agreed that the Chondrostei and Holostei each represent several separately developed lineages. Here, it is suggested, and data are presented supporting the suggestion, that the Teleostei is a mono- phyletic group; furthermore, that for purposes of classification the Teleostei may be considered a superorder in parallel with other lineages within the Actinopterygii, i.e., within the old chondrostean-holostean category. Data on the circumorbital bones are presented, and the modern clupeoid and elopoid groups of fishes are further defined. |
