Abstract
A character termed the "Vertebral Formula" has been utilized in this laboratory to aid in establishing the identity and validity of species of eels. This formula, which is diagnostic for many species, is derived from three counts obtained from radiographs: the number of predorsal, preanal, and total vertebrae, a typical formula appearing as "6-55-146." Vertebral formulae are given for the type specimens of 307 nominal species of eels studied to date as an aid to systematic studies of Anguilliformes.
