Abstract
A new species of eel cod Muraenolepis andriashevi sp. nova from the southern coast of Africa (type specimens were caught at the Agulhas Bank from a depth of 980–1010 m) is described. The new species differsfrom other species of the genus (M. orangiensis, M. marmoratus, M. microps, and M. microcephalus) in specific features of the structure of the first vertebrae, position of dorsal fins with respect to the vertebral column, a unique combination of the number of vertebrae, rays in the 2nd dorsal and anal fins, long ventral fins, and body coloration. Evidence is provided in favor of the restoration of the taxonomic status of eel cod in the rank of a separate suborder in the system of Gadiformes.
