Abstract
The stomach and colon contents of 185 common seals (Phoca vitulina L.) from the coastal shallows of Schleswig-Holstein were examined. The analysis of the food fishes is based on the investigation of otoliths. Main food species are: Gobies, flounder, plaice, smelt, dab, cod and shrimps. The composition of food changes with the age of the seals: the young ones feed mainly on shrimps, gobies and small flatfish, the older ones feed more on bigger flatfish and on a wider spectrum of species. Seasonal changes of the food composition occur. The common seal is not a specialist feeder but takes those species which are very common and/or easy to hunt.
