Abstract
The parasitic copepod Caligus elongatus Nordmann, 1832, is redescribed from the syntypes, and virtually all of the "C. rapax" of Baird, 1850, and later authors is identified with it. A review of hosts and localities reveals that this species parasitizes representatives of 14 orders of fishes including 34 families and at least 64 species. Its known distribution shows it to be mainly restricted to the temperate zones, extending northward in the Atlantic with the Gulf Stream. In the southern hemisphere it has been reported from the South Atlantic at Uruguay and the South Pacific at Southern Australia–Tasmania.
