| Abstract |
Deltares, a research institute in Delft, the Netherlands, will inaugurate a new experimental facility that can produce the largest man-made waves in the world. The Delta Flume, as it's called, is a 300-meter long water-filled trough that's 9.5 meters high and 5 meters wide. It produces waves as high as 4.5 meters that researchers will use to study and improve coastal protection systems. Scientists can also use the flume to study natural processes such as sediment transport along shorelines and the mechanical properties of coastal soils. |
