Abstract
The purpose of the Identification guide to Seashells of South Africa is to bring together in a series of publications the relevant information that will enable malacologists and even the layman to identify the large majority of described South African seashells, regardless of size and rarity. This identification guide also gives an indication of their distribution and habitat. A map of the 3,000 km coastline, from the Mozambique border in the east to the mouth of the Orange River in the west, is provided. The coastline is subdivided into six geographic regions, 'Zululand', 'Natal', 'Transkei', Eastern Cape', 'Southern Cape' and 'West Coast', with approximate localities indicated. ?Due to the broad scope of this work, the information presented will be spread over several volumes. This volume deals with 485 species belonging to the families Vavyloniidae, Buccinidae, Colubrariidae, Columbellidae, Fascicolariidae, Melongenidae, Muricidae, Nassariidae, Ptychatractidae, Turbinellidae and Volutidae. 155 type specimens, some of which have not been illustrated before, are here illustrated.
