Taiwan's ocean program reels from loss of ship, scientists

The sinking of Ocean Researcher V less than 2 years after its maiden scientific cruise and the loss of two scientists are a severe setback for Taiwanese oceanography and related fields. The three small boats previously available to researchers were limited to sailing in coastal waters. The 2700-ton Ocean Researcher V could cruise for up to 50 days in blue water while carrying as many as 30 researchers and 18 crew members. Institutes across Taiwan had ramped up research programs in anticipation of capitalizing on the new ship's exploratory equipment and on-board laboratories. The vessel also opened the door for expanded international collaboration. Officials are scrambling to find a temporary replacement while hoping to eventually build a new ship. |
