| Abstract |
Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) projects bring together diverse stakeholders to share knowledge, power, and responsibility for local and regional planning. As such, ICMs may be viewed as microcosms of international conferences on development and environment. In each case more powerful stakeholders support an environmental conservation agenda at the expense of the socio-economic development interests of the less powerful stakeholders while concealing inequalities in influence through a discourse of cooperative management. A case study from coastal Kenya is used to illustrate these parallels. |
