Abstract
Sediments in two intertidal flats of the river Elbe were analyzed for transformation rates of inorganic mercury into organo-mercury compounds, using a radiochemical technique. Differences in organic matter, protein content, mercury content and transformation rates were very small, but there were differences in the dependance of transformation rates on these parameters. In the Heuckenlock samples (km 612), transformation rates were positively correlated with parameters indicating a high trophic status of the sediment. The limiting factor at this site was the abundance of methyl- or other alkyl- or aryl-donators. In the sediments from Zollenspieker (km 597), there was an exponential decrease in transformation rates with increasing sulfide content. Availability of mercury was the limiting factor at this location.
