| Abstract |
Characteristic hyaline zones in otoliths of 0-group plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) can be induced artificially by rapid rises in water temperature, by high cumulative doses of UV-B radiation, and by starvation. This is evidenced by backdating based on SEM microstructure analysis. Since early postlarval plaice can be exposed to similar conditions in the main nursery grounds, such formations in the otoliths of specimens from the Wadden Sea most probably result from environmental stress during and after the pool-dwelling mode of life. |
