| Abstract |
The production of protein and cellular and extracelluar polysaccharides of the dinoflagellate Amphidinium carteri Hulbert was studied during growth in N- and P-limited media (177 mu gat/1 N, 36.3 mu gat/1 P and 883 mu gat/1 N, 7.26 mu gat/1 P, respectively). There was no sign of increased carbohydrate per cell towards late growth phases. The wt ratio of protein to carbohydrate was rather constant, being independent of the growth phase and invariably below 1 for N-limited cultures and above 2 for P-limited cultures. Protein content per cell was lowest and carbohydrate content per cell highest in N-limited cultures. N-limited cultures exhibited a considerable variation per cell of the same components, both varying by a factor of approx. 4.5 to 1. Carbohydrate per cell in P-limited cultures was remarkably constant. Extracellular carbohydrates were produced mainly towards late growth phases. |
