| Abstract |
The future development of marine chemistry and chemical oceanography is reviewed. In the early days of marine chemistry the chemist started as an analytical chemist. Marine chemistry was a basic part of either physical, geological or biological oceanography. Marine chemistry has now partly become a specialization in itself, but studies remain almost entirely analytical. Marine biologists, physicists and geologists, however, cannot make progress without good chemical data, and the time has come to venture beyond national boundaries. Geographically, oceanography concerns 70% of the globe, and the problems of one country with regard to fishery, pollution, ecosystem protection and exploitation are those of the other. These factors unify many scientists over the world, and it is hoped that both marine chemistry and chemical oceanography will have a great future. |
