| Abstract |
Growth rates and survival of broods of Ostrea edulis larvae were determined when fed batch cultures of Isochrysis galbana and Phaeodactylum tricornutum of various ages. Growth and survival were not related to the age of the cultures of either algal species when fed to larvae 3 to 14 days after inoculation. Measurements of grazing rates of larvae in algal suspensions were made using a flow-through method. Cultures of I. galbana entering the stationary phase of growth were found to have a stimulatory effect on grazing for most batches of larvae tested. Grazing rates on P. tricornutum were unaffected by the age of the culture. Addition of cell-free medium from I. galbana cultures at the stationary phase accelerated grazing, white medium from some collapsing or declining cultures inhibited feeding. It was concluded that compounds with a pronounced effect on feeding were present in highest concentrations in the media during the stationary phase of growth of I. galbana cultures. |
