Abstract
Since its first observation in France (Brittany) in 1979, a small protozoan has rapidly spread over European oyster stocks in most breton farming areas and in some foreign countries. It’s now associated with important mortalities. Recently, this parasite has been labeled Bonamia ostreae g.n., sp.n. In this paper, we mean to point out the specificity and the pathological aspects of the intra-hemocytic location of the parasite, and to give the results of experimental contaminations: it has been possible to demonstrate the direct transmission of the disease from infected oysters to healthy ones without the need of any other host and parasitic stage, and also the activity and pathogenic power of the parasite which can be enhanced by stress conditions.
