Abstract
With heavier modern fishing practices and the inroads thereby made on basic stocks, this author sees the need for specialized or unit fishing aimed at selective catching of mature shoals to avoid mass damage of juveniles. First he describes the development of pelagic trawls. The following chapters deal with existing nets and new concepts, single vessel pelagic trawls and different towing assemblies, otterboards and assembly procedures for pelagic gears, supplemented by practical notes on rigging. The concluding chapters deal with semi-pelagic and single vessel dual-purpose trawls and pelagic pair trawls and their application. Clear illustrations give added value. For the many specialized fisheries now of increasing importance and value throughout the world, this work offers specific economic gains to the practical fisherman.
