BMRI grants aim to inspire and support PhD students and young postdocs to carry out a brilliant idea in the context of their marine research. The BMRIs are unique in Flanders and distinguish themselves from other grants because of their focus on thinking out-of-the-box.
Because marine research is an excellent field where innovation from science and industry reinforce each other, companies are given the opportunity to sponsor a BMRI grant. The total available budget to spend on BMRI grants in 2023 is 30.000 euros, for which we can count on financial support from DEME and from a private donor, each of whom is prepared to take on one grant financially.
Eligible topics to apply for the grant are amongst other the VLIZ philanthropy themes, including pollution, the ocean and human health, marine biodiversity, climate change, ocean-related disasters and marine explorations. The private donor follows the philanthropy themes, whereas DEME gives preference to marine subjects linked to engineering and technological sciences, material sciences, economic sciences and biological sciences.
The grants of up to 5.000 euros serve to assist young marine scientists in their lab and/or field work, data acquisition and analysis, visits to other institutes to use specialized facilities, purchase of equipment or software needed for a particular analysis, etc.
