Abstract
In Ostend a field overtopping tank has been constructed on the eastern harbour breakwater. As the crest level of the breakwater is rather low compared to the mean water level, wave overtopping over the breakwater occurs quite frequently. By measuring instant water level into the overtopping tank, it is possible to determine the volume of water overtopping the breakwater. Mean overtopping discharge as well as individual overtopping volumes per wave can be determined. A video recorder installed on top of the radar tower on the breakwater allows to film overtopping events. By comparing these images taken at specific moments with the measured overtopping volume at that time, a better insight is gained of how a specific overtopping volume looks like.

The intention of this field overtopping installation is to get a better insight into the mean and individual overtopping quantities being dangerous for people. In the specific case of Ostend, this will allow to judge better when the promenade on the breakwaters should be closed for people because the overtopping leads to a dangerous situation. More general this research will allow to quantify the effect of a specific overtopping volume for people.
