Abstract
The acronym RECOSCIX-WIO stands for "Regional Cooperation in Scientific InformationExchange - Western Indian Ocean". So it is involved in the dissemination and managementof information in the marine sciences, serving marine science research units all over EastAfrica. The headquarters of this project is the "Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute" (KMFRI)in Mombasa (Kenya) but one cooperates with institutes in Tanzania, Seychelles, Mauritius,Mozambique, Madagascar and Eritrea.
The project is an initiative of the university of Limburg (Belgium) : LUC and is funded bythe Belgian Ministry for Development Cooperation (ABOS). One collaborates with IOC(Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission)(UNESCO) and several other donororganisations. Coordinator of the project is Prof. Dr. Leo Egghe, Chief Librarian of LUC.
The project was taken over from IOC and started as an LUC project in 1991. Part I ended in 1995. The continuation was approved until March 1999. The project has a staff of 13 collaborators : 12 Kenyans of KMFRI and one Belgian expert.
