Abstract
Somatolactin (SL) is a pituitary hormone isolated and characterised in teleost species. This structurally conserved protein belongs to the growth hormone/prolactin family. The physiological action of SL has not been clearly elucidated but available evidence suggests that it might be involved in the control of some aspects of reproduction. The objective of this study was to analyze the relation between SL cells and the reproductive status in females of a multiple spawning fish, the Pejerrey, Odontesthes bonariensis, a large atherinid species from the inland waters of Argentina.
