Abstract
Partner selection is a characteristic of Cichlasoma dimeros. Prior to each spawning so called pre-spawning behaviour is shown by bath partners of the pair. Triploids production need basic previous knowledge of the reproductive process. Likewise methods to identify ploidy levels must be establisbed. Little cytogenetic information of this genus is available. The few species of Cichlasoma analyzed have shown a diploid number 2n=48 and 2n=47, and are distinct by the chromosome types (6). The number of chromosome sets of a cell is often reflected in cellular and nuclear size. Erythrocyte measurements are commonly used for determination of ploidy levels in fish species (1;2). As a part of a project oriented to obtain triploids in species with parental behaviour, the kariotype and erythrocyte dimensions in diploid individuals were determined. The initial time of fertilization was also established by gametes releasing induction and in vitro fertilization (IVF).
