Abstract
17 beta -oestradiol appears to be produced endogenously by male plaice. The amounts in plasma (average 1.2 ng/ml) are sufficient to induce a small amount of vitellogenin production. The amounts in male flounder are much lower (< 0.1 ng/ml). Nevertheless, there are massively elevated concentrations of vitellogenin in male flounders living in some UK estuaries with a high industrial effluent. Xenoestrogens are likely to be responsible
