As we continue learning about the ecological ramifications of emerging open ocean uses, the question remains as to whether we are managing and monitoring these activities closely enough to ensure the health and stability of the global ocean and the ecosystem services that it provides. The call for a more ecologically holistic approach to management, particularly that of fisheries, has been growing over the last few decades. This chapter will explore oceanic fisheries through the lens of international governance, fisheries management, and pelagic ecology, in order to assess if and how the international community is implementing a more holistic ecosystem approach to fisheries (also known as ecosystem-based fisheries management) in international waters. |
