Abstract
Common cordgrass Spartina anglica is native to Southern England. It is a bastard or hybrid of the European native small cordgrass S. maritima and the North American smooth cordgrass S. alterniflora. At the time, common cordgrass was planted for land reclamation and stabilization of the sediment. It was first observed in Belgium in 1936. However, the species appeared very invasive and created a shift in mudflat vegetations. The result was a reduction in the natural value of this rare coastal habitat.
