Abstract
The Wadden Sea area consists of the sea, the islands and the adjacent parts of the North Sea and mainland. Apart from being an important nature area it also is an area where people live, work and recreate. The Physical Planning Key Decision (PKD) is a governmental instrument in the planning of functions "destinations" and activities (land use). Within the system of physical planning the PKD "Wadden Sea" is quite unique in the sense that it is related to an area instead of to a subject. In 1980 the first PKD was made for the Wadden Sea and now the renewal of this Decision is in progress. The Wadden Society participates in this process. Both the results of ten years PKD policy for nature conservation in the Wadden Sea area and the bottlenecks in the upcoming PKD "Wadden Sea" are worthy of attention.
