Abstract
The general circulation of the Western Mediterranean Sea is characterized by strong energetic features (fronts, meanders, gyres, upwellings, deep water formation, intense boundary exchanges..) which cannot be inferred from hydrological data fields by simple, classical, methods such as the geostrophic approximation. In this paper, somme essential characteristics of the Western Mediterranean's general circulation are discussed in the light of recent observations with the GHER 3D model.
