Abstract
Phytoplankton net samples collected the year round in the Marsdiep tidal inlet ( Dutch Wadden Sea) frequently contained Phaeocystis colonies. In the winter months of 1990 and 1991, before the spring bloom, large colonies were present in low concentrations of a few per m³. These colonies might provide the inoculum for the spring bloom. Colonies observed in winter are similar to those occurring in spring and summer; they all belong to Phaeocystis globosa Scherffel.
