Abstract
Growth rate of Mytilus edulis L. has been studied by means of transplantation experiments at three tidal levels at two places (Balgzand and Horntje) from April to November 1970. The main results were: Growth rate was negatively correlated with tidal level (time of exposure to air). Slow growth goes with heavy shells. At the same tidal level growth was much faster at Horntje than at the Balgzand. With increasing time of exposure to the air condition factor decreased at Horntje, as has been observed by many authors. At the Balgzand, however, an inverse relationship was found. Specific gravity of the shell did not vary, neither with level nor with place. The shells were found to grow allometrically.
