Abstract
The aim of this project is to investigate the effect of sand extraction on sediment composition, species richness and functional richness by (1) the use of physical and biological parameters generated from SPI images as an indicator of changes in the bottom ecosystem. SPI related parameters (e.g. apparent redox discontinuity layer, bottom roughness, fauna, sediment type) provide an image of biogeochemical processes in the sediment and are used to calculate the benthic habitat quality score (BHQ). (2) Macro and meiobenthos sampling using Van Veen and Reinecke, respectively. (3) Taking microbial samples and characterising them genetically with regard to functional processes. (4) Collecting organisms for genetic barcoding.
