| A new policy for the management of shellfish stocks has been introduced in 2004 for coastal marine waters including Grevelingen and Veerse Meer. Management of shellfish stocks (molluscs) presently is based on a integration with ecological objectives. Major elements of the policy are closed areas, catch quotas, taking into account nutrition needs for birds in some areas. Fishing for mussels on the tidal flats is only permitted under special conditions such as the presence of at least 2000 ha mussel banks. Further, management in the Wadden Sea takes into account the agreements by the Trilateral Governmental Conference on the Protection of the Wadden Sea . The project has been adjusted to the new management policy. A number of activities have been cancelled in 2006 such as the annual quantitative assessments of mussels in the Wadden Sea and a survey on bivalves in the coastal area. The major elements of the new programme are an assessment of littoral cockles in the Wadden Sea and Easterscheldt and a quantitative inventory of littoral mussel banks in the Wadden Sea and Easterscheldt. Also an inventory of oyster banks in the Waddensea will be carried out. The assessments and inventories will be carried out through surveys in the different using research vessels and charters. Results and products: Reports with analyses of survey data; maintenance (and international exchange) of data base; support to web sites. |
