Abstract
The role of the benthos in the dynamics of marine ecosystems will be studied by determining the share played by the benthos in the re-utilisation of the organic material which arrives on the sea bottom. The temporal and spatial variability of these processes in the Westerschelde estuary and in the Belgian coastal zone will be determined. The project will examine both the meiobenthic components (primarily nematodes) and the hyperbenthic communities.
