Abstract:
De Nachtegaal (the nightingale) Flemish Visitor and Nature Education Centre is located on the border between the Oosthoekduinen and the Calmeynbos. This centre is an initiative of the Agency for Nature and Forests – Coastal Conservation unit of the Flemish Ministry of environment, nature and energy.

There are many reasons to visit this centre. The first is without a doubt its location right in middle of valuable dune complexes. The visitor centre is then also the ideal starting point to reach one of the many Flemish wildlife areas on the West Coast.

In the permanent exhibition at De Nachtegaal, the wonderful world of wildlife opens up to you. Get to know the fauna and flora of the sea, beaches and dunes. Come into contact with the fascinating way of life of organisms in a wide range of biotopes. Discover the wildlife areas on the West Coast and consider the possibilities and need for the protection, management and development of nature. Go back in time and find out more about how the Flemish coastal plain came about …

There is also a journey of discovery in store for children. The ‘Kinderroute’ guides young children in a playful, active way through the exhibition and brings a number of beach and dunes themes to life.

De Nachtegaal also puts on temporary exhibitions. Each half year, a new wildlife or environmental theme is approached.

In the nature garden, you can discover 11 reconstructed dune biotopes with their typical flora. So you can walk along fordunes covered in marram grass and a real parabolic dune. Cross through scrub, explore a wet dune slack and come back to have a rest on the pontoons near the dune pool. The many information signs in the garden give you all kinds of details about the wildlife.
