The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) was the central theme throughout the program this year. Julian Barbiere of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission came to propose the Ocean Decade, and called the marine community present at VMSD19 to contribute to its preparation and deployment. Presenters and participants were also challenged to reflect on how they can contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with their marine research and ocean data.

We want to thank all the participants for making this day a highlight for the marine sciences in Flanders and surroundings! We hope that everyone will be there again next year and that they can convince missing colleagues that they should not miss this day. In the autumn of 2019, keep an eye on the announcements for the next edition (VLIZ awards and abstracts). In 2020, the 20th VLIZ Marine Science Day will receive a big birthday bow
