The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) presents an annual scientific prize to encourage innovative marine research, whether fundamental or applied. Before this research had to focus on the study of the structure or functioning of the North Sea. But from this year on all studies in seas and oceans around the world can compete for the prize. Applications however, are now limited to researchers who are affiliated to a Belgian university or research institute, and did no more than three years ago received their PhD-degree. The prize amounts to 1000 EUR and is indivisible. It will be granted to reward a recent original scientific contribution. Studies pertaining to the biodiversity of the local ecosystem are equally welcomed. The contribution has to be of postgraduate or postdoctoral level, referring to max. three years of postdoctoral research. The North Sea Award will be officially presented on the occasion of the 15th VLIZ Young Marine Scientists' Day on 20 February 2015. Candidates are requested to submit their candidature before 30 November 2014. More information about the new regulations and procedure is available on the VLIZ website.
