Alien species in the Mediterranean Sea by 2010

Zenetos et al. (2010) present the state-of-art on alien species in the Mediterranean Sea, making distinctions among the four subregions defined in the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive: (i) the Western Mediterranean Sea (WMED); (ii) the Central Mediterranean Sea (CMED); (iii) the Adriatic Sea (ADRIA); and (iv) the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMED). The updated checklist (December 2010) of marine alien species within each subregion, along with their acclimatization status and ori- gin, is provided. A total of 955 alien species is known in the Mediterranean, the vast majority of them having being introduced in the EMED (718), less in the WMED (328) and CMED (267) and least in the Adriatic (171). Of these, 535 species (56%) are established in at least one area. Find out more here!

The Bridge at the Edge of the World and Sustainability, 20 December 2012, American Center, Alexandria

On 20 December 2012 there is a meeting and book discussion planned by the American Center in Alexandria at 6:30 pm: “The Bridge at the Edge of the World -  Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability” by James Gustave Speth.

How serious are the threats to our environment? Here is one measure of the problem: if we continue to do exactly what we are doing, with no growth in the human population or the world economy, the world in the latter part of this century will be unfit to live in. Of course human activities are not holding at current levels—they are accelerating, dramatically—and so, too, is the pace of climate disruption, biotic impoverishment, and toxification. In this book Gus Speth, author of Red Sky at Morning and a widely respected environmentalist, begins with the observation that the environmental community has grown in strength and sophistication, but the environment has continued to decline, to the point that we are now at the edge of catastrophe. Speth contends that this situation is a severe indictment of the economic and political system we call modern capitalism. Our vital task is now to change the operating instructions for today’s destructive world economy before it is too late. The book is about how to do that.

Medcoast Conference 2011: PEGASO participation and Rhodes Declaration

The Tenth International Conference on the Mediterranean Coastal Environment was organised during 25-29 October 2011 in Rhodes, Greece. The event marked the twenty years of MEDCOAST efforts. Thirteen PEGASO institutions with about 20 representatives took active role in running of the conference.  Two successive PEGASO keynote sessions that took place during the whole afternoon of the third day of the event allowed nine oral presentations mostly based on the work of PEGASO and some discussion from the audience. The two-page Rhodes declaration was adapted unanimously by the participants. The declaration cites the PEGASO project as a significant collaborative effort towards the development of tools and techniques for coastal and marine management and generation of the essential data and information at the basin scale.  The proceedings of the conference are available for purchase from the MEDCOAST website.
