ICZM Protocol for the Mediterranean enters into force!

The ICZM Protocol for the Mediterranean has entered into force on 24 March 2011, a bit over two years after it was opened for ratifications! The conditions needed to its entry into force have been fulfilled with the sixt ratification, by Syria in September last year. The other five parties that have ratified the Protocol are (in chronological order): Slovenia, France, Albania, Spain, and the EU. Such a short period of time needed for this Protocol to enter into force expresses the full commitment of the Parties to implement the provisions set out in the frame of this Protocol. Being a unique legal instrument for sustainable coastal development, the ICZM Protocol provides an effective way to ensure that human actions are undertaken with a concern for balancing economic, social and environmental goals and priorities in a long-term perspective.
